give: what’s Yours is not mine

We tend to forget that don’t we.

I do, for sure.

Every now and then I get reminded.

When I take pride in generosity.

Even as the sermon today was about relinquishing all.

Holding on to nothing.

It ain’t mine to begin with.

So why be offended?

So why feel short changed?

So why demand and expect?

But keep going all out.

Going all out not just because we are able.

Not just because we should expect recompense.

In any way, shape, form.

Only for an attitude of cheerfulness.

Only for an attitude of worship.

Only as a conveyor of things good.

Can’t convey with fists clenched and knuckles white.

Can’t give.

what’s Yours is not mine.

give.

give love.

give hope.

give peace.

give joy.

give yummy.

give smiles.

give warmth.

give life.

give.

what’s Yours is not mine.

Coffee, chocolate croissant and a birthday song.

Good morning 3-8.

3 is good.

and then there’s 3.

in our little family this year.

Mel + xiaobaby + me.

Three.

Eight is good too.

8’s 八 like 發 (fa).

New beginnings.

And blessings.

Remember all the birthdays in our little apartment in Toa Payoh.

Chocolate cake from Wong’s Cake Shop.

Special order with chocolate rice on the side.

Rice how I love thee.

Chocolate ones too.

Mama takes the order 2 weeks in advance.

Time to get creative with its design.

Trigger.

Setting up the count down and the eager anticipation.

School that day is just an inconvenient distraction.

Chicken wings.

Coca-Cola.

And of course red eggs and noodles.

Longevity and blessings.

Papa and mama with their ceremonial “a year older” speech.

And the traditional picture in front of the family TV.

Cake on the round white wheely-table.

Tyan, Shiun and me in our best.

Pa in a shirt and tie.

Ma in a nice tailored dress.

All of us with shoes on.

In the house.

More pics with the Mamiya camera from the big green Milo tin.

Don’t forget to turn on the big square lamp in the hall.

It will supplement the lighting from the flash on the Mamiya.

Last but not least, the red packet.

The Hongbao.

More blessings.

And let’s not forget the little deer label on petite green glass bottle.

Nothing baby about this Cham.

Babycham.

A quick gulp and a few slow sips.

The bubblies take its toll.

Out on the couch for the evening.

Good night.

Let’s do this all over again next year.

Happy three eight.

Thanks for giving me my birthdays.

Lovingly and wonderfully.

My boots are muddy

Muddy Boots

Muddy boots.

I am used to muddy boots.

Army boots.

Soccer boots.

Rugby boots.

All muddy and all mine.

Muddy boots at a construction site.

Just like papa’s.

I remember his boots and shoes.

Covered in construction site mud.

Dust, mud and sweat.

Sweat from all day hikes.

Inside, outside.

Up and down flights.

Tan lines and red necks.

So now I know.

Sweat marks and hard hats.

Long days and late nights.

Lunches eaten at dinner time.

So now I know.

Wrestling plans.

Coordinating difficulty.

Working it.

So now I know.

Should have known then.

Would have been nice.

To be nice.

Be nice to papa.

For all that he provided.

So now I get to do it too.

Be a papa.

Provide for all.

So now I know.

To be grateful.

And thankful.

And respectful.

Thank you.

倒杯水给爸爸。

Bring papa a glass of water.

Papa, my boots are muddy too.

Celebrating our second year with my honey.

So special.

So good.

Love being married.

Still loving it.

And a little bun in the oven too.

It has been real special to share all these moments with my love.

A love given for us to share.

To know what sharing is.

What loving is.

And now we get to share it with xiaobaby too.

It has been rough for both mel and xiaobaby.

And as we go through this, we do it in love.

We do it for love.

Love for xiaobaby just begins and grows.

We talk to xiaobaby everyday.

I know xiaobaby talks to us too.

I might be a little more imaginative with what baby says.

Though I don’t think I am too far off.

Exciting.

Next year’s anniversary, we’ll have xiaobaby celebrating with us.

2nd is a good time for 1st!

好!

That’s what 爸爸 would say.

With gusto.

And enthusiastic claps.

He’d be so proud.

So happy.

好! Good!

I know he looks down and sees it.

Though it be nice to share that moment in the flesh.

Share that with our family.

The grain of pride in heritage and tradition runs deep in ours.

Ingrained.

大白兔奶糖 (White Rabbit Candy)

人和鞋 (Ren Ho Shoes)

梅林洋梅 (Ma Ling Arbutus)

And many more.

Our Chinese staple make-up.

I admit I resented it when I was a kid.

Growing up Chinese in our family was a little too Chinese for me.

Then.

Cultural educations at the National Theatre.

Circus troupes, operas from the Mainland.

Entertainment and historic movies at the Golden Mile Cinema.

And the joy on his face when the Chinese won the Thomas Cup Badminton Championship years ago.

He hugged and threw me in the air.

That threw me for a loop.

Then.

All things Chinese, our parents made us.

爸爸 especially.

He loved China.

His motherland.

He missed China.

He shared that passion with us.

With me.

Being Chinese-漢.

Being Proud﹣威.

Tonight he is proud too, looking down.

The ceremony wowed us.

Pyrotechnics.

Technology.

Choreography.

Everything.

Everyone.

A celebration.

Unifying all the identity “deposited” in me all these years.

Resonating 好!

Very 好!

China.

At the end, it will be too.

God bless China 好!好!
