Are you ready?

For next March?

That’s when baby arrives.

That’s what everyone’s asking.

Will I be ready.

Ready for the arrival.

Ready to be a father, daddy, 爸爸。

So my ready-made, generic answer’s been, “I guess I’ll be”.

Or “I’ll have to be”.

So this weekend at church I got a “bevy” of the same.

“You ready?”

“You going to be a father…”

Et cetera.

As I began to deliver more of the same, I felt an epiphanic answer come on.

I AM already.

A father.

A daddy.

A 爸爸。

At inception.

How apt, in these times of debates, conventions and election.

I am, not because I am ready.

Ready physically.

Ready emotionally.

Ready spiritually.

All that will be a life long journey.

I am, not because I am ready.

I am.

Because I’m already.

Muddy Boots

Muddy boots.

I am used to muddy boots.

Army boots.

Soccer boots.

Rugby boots.

All muddy and all mine.

Muddy boots at a construction site.

Just like papa’s.

I remember his boots and shoes.

Covered in construction site mud.

Dust, mud and sweat.

Sweat from all day hikes.

Inside, outside.

Up and down flights.

Tan lines and red necks.

So now I know.

Sweat marks and hard hats.

Long days and late nights.

Lunches eaten at dinner time.

So now I know.

Wrestling plans.

Coordinating difficulty.

Working it.

So now I know.

Should have known then.

Would have been nice.

To be nice.

Be nice to papa.

For all that he provided.

So now I get to do it too.

Be a papa.

Provide for all.

So now I know.

To be grateful.

And thankful.

And respectful.

Thank you.

倒杯水给爸爸。

Bring papa a glass of water.

Papa, my boots are muddy too.
